Swimming Pool 60 MIL membranes – The Future of Swimming Pool Liners

As a swimming pool owner at some point, you will need to have the liner replaced. The average lifespan for a pool liner is five to fifteen years, depending on the type and the thickness of the liner. Average pool liners are 20, 27 or 28 millimeters thick. But what if there were an alternative to these liners that would eliminate the need for patching, painting, scraping, or scrubbing algae again?

The answer just may be swimming pool 60 MIL membranes, originally developed in Germany to line competition pools, splash pads, and community swimming pools, this revolutionary liner made its way across the pond to the United States in the 1960’s. The PVC membrane, which is three times the thickness of the thinnest average liner, requires little maintenance and is practically indestructible. A life-expectancy of 20 or 30 years is not an unreasonable one with PVC membrane.

The PVC membrane is manufactured from a specialty PVC formula and formed into a flexible blanket that is reinforced with a high strength inner core of polyester mesh fabric. As opposed to conventional 20+ millimeter pool liners, the 60 MIL PVC membrane is custom-cut and bonded on-site, resulting in an attractive, virtually watertight pool lining. The material can be used on any in-ground or above ground pool type, whether steel, concrete, fiberglass or aluminum.

The material will arrive on-site in 6-foot rolls containing 400-square feet of PVC membrane. If the existing shell is sound the membrane can fit over any material. The surface may be prepared if needed, followed by a layer of base felt or nonwoven geotextile fabric, affixed to the surface. This material allows the pool to shift beneath the membrane, smoothing out any rough areas. After the membrane pieces have been cut, they will be laid so that they overlap by a few inches, and then welded together with a hot-air blower inside the existing pool structure creating a watertight shell.

At this stage attention to detail is vital to ensuring a complete and thorough bond. Areas such as steps and corners may require the material to be triple overlapped. The final step in the process is the application of liquid PVC along all the seams. Details such as depth or lane markings and even custom logos can be permanently added using specialized PVC materials. In addition, PVC membranes can be installed in nearly any weather conditions, drastically limiting downtime.
